SOCIAL MOVEMENTS CENTRE
The Social Movements Centre aims to map SRHR movements across the world and to help IPPF and MAs to sustainably engage with movements in a way that contributes to both their movement goals and IPPF’s strategy. The centre also supports movements directly through capacity building, funding and connecting them with each other within its Community of Practice.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
- A safe and generative Community of Practice for peer-learning, support, and co-creation.
- Dedicated support to social movements in areas such as fundraising, lobbying, safety and security, etc.

WINNING NARRATIVES CENTRE
IPPF’s Winning Narratives Centre is a global initiative working with strategic communications experts and researchers, specialised in cognitive linguistics, values-based framing, and political communication, alongside our Member Associations, partners, and allies, to develop powerful new values-based narratives. The aim of the centre is to create sustained broad public support for SRHR and gender equality, isolating anti-SRHR actors, by targeting ‘moveable middle’ audiences (persuadable segment of society) to understand what values they hold, what aspirations, fears, and beliefs influence their attitudes and behaviour, and accordingly, how they react to different framings of the same topic.
The centre has supported our members and partners in the implementation of this work and witnessed how this approach helped advance abortion rights in Ireland and create public debate on abortion rights in Malta; increase public support for sexuality education and respond to far-right campaigns against sexuality and relationship education in Nigeria, Spain, Bosnia, and North Macedonia; counter attempts to roll back SRHR in law and policy in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary and Kenya; fight stereotypes linked to gender-based violence in the Caribbean and Thailand; advance LGBTI rights in the Cook Islands and Sri Lanka.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
- Effective narrative tools to anticipate and counter new opposition discourse and trends through horizon scanning, discourse analysis, targeted research, counter-narrative development, and visual framing.
- Community of Practice sessions where MAs and partners share best practices on different aspects of strategic communications work, as well as troubleshoot and get peer and expert advice on overcoming challenges.
- Project Cycle training to guide participants through different steps in the narrative project cycle (strategy, audiences, message development, and testing, dissemination, evaluation, etc.)
- Tailored trainings and workshops on different aspects of Narrative work (i.e., visual framing)
- E-learning modules on values-based communications.
- Framechecks – expert review and feedback on comms content.
- Comms Clinic – 30-min chats with a Winning Narratives communications coach.

COUNTERING OPPOSITION CENTRE
IPPF’s Countering Opposition Centre is a cooperative, global initiative to reduce the impact of a rising tide of extremist, anti-rights and anti-gender movements. We combine the expertise of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF), and Planned Parenthood Global (PPG) to drive progressive change and stay one step ahead of the opposition to SRHR. Human rights are under threat and the SRHR community must be more effective than ever to protect them.
We work through research and monitoring and training to support MAs’ contextualized responses to any risks and threats. The Opposition Centre has supported our members and partners in developing their own analyses of the opposition. To do this, we invite MAs to take part in Opposition Curriculum sessions to increase their knowledge about the opposition and design appropriate responses.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
- Training sessions exploring MAs’ specific opposition contexts and ways to mitigate local opposition attacks.
- Articles and reports about possible risks on the horizon, opposition activities on social media and many more things that can be found on the Movement Accelerator Digital Platform.
